I found this unusual looking spider on the front edge of a step. If anyone knows what type of spider it is. Please let me know.

has told me "It's some type of Huntsman, a mature male(who has lost one of his pedipalps, probably while mating), though there are many different kinds of Huntsmen in Australia, so I cannot pinpoint which one this is. This is a rather odd position for them, as they are usually seen all sprawled out like a crab(hence why their close relatives in the Southern US are often called "Giant Running Crab Spiders"), but they will stretch out like this occasionally, too."

Thankyou very much for this information. We have quite a lot of huntmans here, but the ones I normally see are much bigger & usually a plain brown, so I did not recognize this as one. This one was very slender & elegant, and also much smaller in comparison. It was actually in this position for most of the day. I will add this information to my description.

The big, buffy, plain-brown ones are the common Bush Huntsman, the same sort of spider that was used in the movie, "Arachnophobia", but it's just one of many you have down there in Australia. There's even one that is a handsome pure white with black stripes all over. In Malaysia there's a flourescent orange species, which is one I'd REALLY love to have!

Yes they certainly are fascinating creatures. I am working on my closeups, as I would love to take more insect & spider photographs, however they don't all turn out the way I would wish them to. I have also photographed a crab spider [link] , it isn't quite as crystal clear as I would like it to be, but it is an extremely different sort of spider. I also love taking photographs of frogs.

Hmmm interesting no doubt. The only creature form nature which gives me the creeps is the spider family. Not sure why but oh well. I had the rare chance here where I live yesterday to film and play with a Tarantula which my son and me came across while hiking. I tried like heck to get the nerve to place my hand in front and try and pick him up. Just something about em that gets to me though. Any rate a very neat shot and I thank you as always for showing us your part of the world.

Last but not least I hope you had a great holiday and that 2007 is even better. I look forward to continuing to watch your gallery this year. Take care

The ones I know aren't poisonous don't worry me. The ones in this [link] have bitten me several times while at work. However if I saw a poisonous one I wouldn't get too near. We have a couple of nasties in Australia.

Thank you I had a fairly quiet holiday at home, sounds like yours was probably more fun hiking etc. Hope 2007 brings you happiness and will watch with interest for you Tarantula photos.
